Like any industry, HVAC installation and repair comes with its own vocabulary. To a layman, these terms are confusing, but it’s worth it to take the time and familiarize yourself before your air conditioner breaks down.

Here’s a rundown of the most important and commonly used AC terms you’ll need to know.

    1. HVAC:

An acronym for Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning, HVAC is a broad term that encompasses all aspects of air conditioning. Generally used interchangeably with AC.

    2. Dehumidifier:

This is a device specifically designed to pull water from the air. It functions by cooling the air and forcing the humidity to return to a liquid state, at which point the dehumidifier captures it.

    3. SEER:

Acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER is essentially a measure of how efficient your AC unit is judging by how much electricity it requires for what level of temperature change it is enacting.

    hvac4. Air Flow:

Air flow refers to the volume of air that your HVAC unit and ducts can move through them.

    5. Air Changes by Hour:

Also referred to as Air Exchange Rate, Air Changes by Hour is a mathematical formula with the hourly ventilation rate divided by the volume of air in a room.

    6. Variable Air Volume:

Often abbreviated to VAV, this term refers to a system that changes how much air it pulls in based on temperature requirements instead of maintaining a flat throughput at all times. It is a more efficient type of machine than a constant air volume unit by lowering electrical demand when not cooling or heating.

    7. Enthalpy:

This is a term that refers to the amount of heat in the air based both off of dry air and its water vapor. It is used to decide how efficient it is to pull new air in from outside the home for the electrical cost.
