How to: Clean Your Outdoor AC Unit like a Pro

How to clean your outdoor AC unit in Florida.

It’s March! Time for Spring Cleaning

Spring is time to clear out old clutter and bring in a new and improved, cleaner you. Your AC unit is no different. Cleaning your AC unit can help extend its life and generate cleaner, cooler air in your home. Regularly cleaning out debris and changing your air filter allows your unit run more efficiently and cut back on energy consumption by 15%.

Here’s how to safely deactivate and clean your outdoor AC unit for optimal performance all season long.

Step 1: Remove the AC Filter

The first step is to properly remove your old AC filter. Air filters catch dust particles and other allergens, allowing your system to blow clean air and improve indoor air quality. It’s best practice to change your air filter at least every three months or as early as one month for pet owners and smokers.

Your air filter can be found on the AC unit by the return duct. If not, it can also be found in the house behind an access panel.

Step 2: Turn Off the Power

Next, turn off the power to the outdoor AC unit. You can do this by turning off the switch on your circuit breaker. Afterward, remove the top panel of the unit with a screwdriver.

Here, you will be able to see the main fan and the condenser coils. Be careful not to damage the main fan or any wiring when removing the main panel.

Step 3: Remove any Debris

Check underneath the condenser coils to see if there is any debris. Use a vacuum to remove any dust or leaves that are hiding in its nooks and crannies. Be careful not to bend the coils. After vacuuming, rinse the coils with water from a hose. Be sure to wear gloves when rinsing the coils– the fins that are attached can be sharp!

Step 4: Wipe the Fan Blades

After vacuuming up the debris, use a damp rag to wipe the main fan blades. Dust and dirt can build up on the blades. This can cause more dust and dirt to enter your home. Be sure to wear gloves because the blades are sharp.

When finished, you can reassemble your AC unit. Use a screwdriver to place the main panel back after all components are placed back inside the unit.
