China Develops An Air Purification System for Shanghai

Air Purification in Shangahi.

China isn’t exactly known for its air quality due to large industries being housed there and their reliance on coal during the winter months, but they have come to a solution for a cleaner and safer breathing environment: a 328-foot tall air purification system in Shanghai. Even better? It seems to be working.

This idea was brought about in 2015 with its resurrection happening last year. This experimental tower has improved air for the surrounding 3.86 square miles over the past few months and has produced over 353 million cubic feet of clear hair since it was erected and has cleared smog to moderate levels on particularly bad days.

So, how does this tower work? The surrounding area is basically one giant greenhouse, where polluted air is sucked into it and heated up using solar energy. The hot air then gets pulled up into the tower and goes through many levels of purification to produce clean air. Since this is solar run, it uses barely any energy during daylight hours and is extremely quiet.

According to pollution monitoring systems surrounding the tower, the average reduction in PM2.5—the most dangerous smog particles—has fallen 15 percent during the heaviest pollution. They expect to increase the productivity of this tower as time goes on and more data is collected, but this is an amazing step towards cleaner, healthier air because polluted air doesn’t only affect the area is it coming from; it affects the entire world.
