An Air Conditioning system is one of the most vital parts of any home. In hotter climates especially, it is a crucial part of our lives that often gets overlooked. One of the most important parts of any AC unit is the air filter. The air filter ensures that the air we breathe in any space is free from dust, mold, animal dander, pollen, and even bacteria. The catch is that they need to be changed regularly, which many homeowners tend to forget about.
How Your AC Works
Changing the air filter in an AC unit is critical to AC maintenance, and since it’s up to you to do it, let’s go over a few key details.
Think about how an air conditioning unit works. An AC unit performs a process that
removes heat and moisture from your home. The unit then recirculates the cool air. All air in your home will contain dust and foreign particles – your air filter’s job is to collect the dust, dirt, pollen, mold, lint, hair, animal fur, and bacteria that flows through it while it runs.
To maintain a steady flow of cool air, an air filter captures dust and other particles, which in turn cleans the air as it gets processed through. Air filters left unchanged will cause the air conditioning unit to become less efficient and consume more energy, which could potentially run your utility bill up!
Good Practice Recommendations
So how often should you change your air filter? On average, and based on how often you’re at home, it’s good practice to change your air filter according to the following:
- If your home or office sees very minimal use, then changing the air filter every six to twelve months is sufficient – so start with your first change at the beginning of summer!
- If your home or office sees normal use and you have no pets, then change your air filter every 90 days (or four times per year). The start of every new season is an easy way to remember!
- If anyone in your home or office has allergies, or if you have any pets, it’s recommended that you change your air filter every 30 days. Pick a date or day at the beginning of the month and start off each month with a fresh new filter!
- Regardless of how often you replace it, you should be checking your filter periodically. If it looks dirty, it’s smart to go ahead and swap it out with a new one. Keep in mind that older units require more frequent maintenance, so if your unit is getting on in years, be sure to check the filter a bit more often.
Breathe Easy and Breathe Clean
Make a schedule to know when you should be changing your filter, and stick to it! Dirty air filters take a toll on your air conditioning unit and could set you up for a costly AC repair. If spending a little bit of time to responsibly take care of your AC unit means prolonging its life, we’d say it’s well worth it! Think about it this way: the air you breathe directly affects the health of you and your family. It’s important to make sure your home stays clean and has fresh, clean air at all times. Breathe easy and breathe clean – you and your family deserve it.
