It’s no secret that air conditioners are working full-time during Florida summers, but are you using yours correctly? If you are making one of these six common AC mistakes, it could have major ramifications for your entire system and home. Plus, changing your ways could save you money in the long run. (Who doesn’t want to save money?) Let’s get to it:
1. Not changing the air filter
This is one of the most common AC mistakes and you’ve probably heard your AC guy suggest that you should change your air filter every 3-6 months. Do it! Your air filter works to remove bacteria, dirt, and other harmful particles. The more it collects, the less efficiently air can pass through it. If your air conditioning doesn’t seem to be working as well as it used to, this is the first thing to check.
P.S. You should change your air filter more frequently if you have pets or if someone in your home has allergies or smokes.
2. Turning your AC down too much
You come inside after a long run or being at the beach or pool, and you want your home to get cool FAST. So, you set your AC to something way below what you actually want, like 60 degrees, to speed up the process. Right…? Wrong.
Turning your AC way down (or way up), unfortunately, won’t speed up anything. It will cause your AC to run longer than needed and waste energy. Simply setting your AC to the temperature you want is your best bet.
3. Cooling Empty Rooms
If you’re looking to save, you might start by only cooling high-traffic areas. Closing vents in rooms you don’t frequent will push cool air into the rooms you do. Other tips: ensure that large furniture pieces aren’t blocking vents and making your system work harder and close closet doors to create even less space for your AC to cool
4. Thermostat Placement Issues
Did you know the placement of your thermostat is very important? If it is near a sunny window or door, a hot oven, or even a lamp, it might be showing an incorrect reading. This could cause your AC to run when it doesn’t need to. A hallway with no outer walls and near no major appliances is the best place for your thermostat.
We all know that it’s a good idea to turn the thermostat up a few degrees when leaving for work or school, but how often do you forget? Upgrading to a programmable thermostat can end up saving you hundreds on your annual bill.
5. Not taking advantage of fans
Some people think that if they have the AC on, they can skip using a fan. Actually, both portable and ceiling fans can ease your AC’s burden of keeping your home cool. Fans work by moving air around the room and creating a “wind chill” effect which keeps the air cooler. Use a good fan and your air conditioner in tandem to save.
P.S. Running your fan counterclockwise during the summer promotes more air flow.
6. Not Getting Regular Maintenance
You get annual check-ups at the doctor, you take your car to get serviced regularly, your AC unit is no different. Annual maintenance extends the life of your system and prevents any major breakdowns which end up costing big time. Many AC companies, like Air Boca, offer an annual maintenance program at a discounted price. We’ll help you avoid making AC mistakes and ensure that your AC is running as efficiently as possible.
